August 2008 Archives

Welcome back fellow players of the game called golf, or as my man Ted Knight aka Judge Smails states in the famous dinner table scene from the movie Caddyshack... "of course over there they call it gawf" referring to his friend the Secretary of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews. Great stuff always makes me laugh. Don't get it, don't have to, just go with it and try not to overthink it.

The PGA Tour FedEx Cup Playoffs have started this week. The top 144 on the Fed Ex Cup Points list are in the field and the 144th guy Lee Janzen (didn't know he still played ) and the 1st guy on the list Tiger are out, so the second place guy Kenny Perry takes the top spot. Speaking of Kenny Perry, he once again put himself in this writer's doghouse. He was complaining about the "tweaking" of the FedEx Cup Playoffs this year saying he didn't like the fact that there could be such big movements from the bottom of the standings to the top of the standings because of the new point structure. Kenny feels that the players who have played well all season should haven't to worry about guys making the final event or taking over spots from top guys who have played well all season. What's that Kenny?  You never heard of teams or players in other sports "getting hot at the right time" or the prohibibitive favorite getting upset by a lower ranked opponent. Check Appalachian State vs. Michigan last year. Stanford vs. USC , NY Giants vs. New England Patriots and too many others to mention. Come on Kenny I never had a bone to pick with you before this season, but by not attempt to qualify for The U.S. Open, not traveling to The British Open and not even gutting out a second round at The PGA Championship and now complaining that no one else should have a chance to win the FedEx Cup Playoffs except for the top 30 guys on tour has qualified you in my opinion as The Number One Dork on Tour (move over Woody ) and maybe in sports for the year 2008. Has anyone done less with more this year than Kenny Perry and seemed lamer trying to defend it? I think not!

With golf's ultimate warrior Tiger Woods sidelined, I think Kenny may have set the coolness factor of golf back by about 5 years, maybe a Anthony Kim belt buckle to the head will knock some sense in to this dorkwad from Kentucky, and remind him that if we want golf to be taken seriously as a sport by non-golf fans you have to show for the majors and not whine about having to deal with competition from the rank and file. Have a shot of Jack and get your warpaint on Kenny...The Europeans are coming to invade your homestate of Kentucky for the Ryder Cup. No excuses, you better be ready!

Man, I'm ready for some football!

Pro Tip: If your having trouble making a weigh shift check out some of the theories behind The Stack and Tilt Swing. I think there is some merit to the fundamentals and have had some good ball striking success in the limited amount of time I have had to experiment with this newest swing craze. Just type "Stack and Tilt Golf Swing" in your search engine and should be able to print a 3-page primer on the swing.

Any questions about The Stack or Tilt or other swing theories of course you will want to consult your local PGA Professional at the golf course nearest you.

Time flies, is flying and may be flown.....

No kidding, tell me about it. We're on the cusp of August and summer will be over before you know it and I haven't even started my summer golf program yet. I was supposed to play more golf, (haven't). Was supposed to incorporate a new swing.(haven't). Stack and Tilt was going to resussciate my putrid iron play. My short game was going to improve dramatically with my plan to only chip and putt when I played twilight golf with my boys who are 9 and 12. (Hasn't).

Apparently, golf is only a blip on my boys' radar.  My 12-year-old loves baseball and currently hates golf. However my curve ball is breaking 3 feet with all of the pitching we have been doing. My 9-year-old decided he likes golf but loves the instant gratification related to video games more. Especially after his last 3 hole mini-round which included a 16 on a par four, a 7 on a par 3 and a 6 on a par five (go figure?). He decided his expertise at all things electronic are easier on his psyche than Mike Strantz's massive waste areas on the second hole at True Blue where the 16 was made. I'll have to give the kid credit, he wouldn't pick up and he actually 2 putted once he got on the green.

I don't think I could have been prouder of the tenacious little guy.....Now if he would only apply some of that moxie  to cleaning his room. The good folks who invented the Stick-up should use his room as a test lab.........

Time is flying but hasn't left the coop yet....there is still 5 weeks until Labor Day give or take a long day or two, the Stack and Tilt doesn't seem too complicated, the 9-year-old mentioned something about playing golf, and even the 12-year-old baseball freak didn't say that golf was stupid the other day when a family golf outing was mentioned.  Who knows, maybe this summer can be saved afterall....

If you want to save your summer, come to Myrtle Beach now, I know it's hot but is it any hotter were you are? I doubt it. True Blue and Caledonia are in fantastic shape and the summer pricing is affordable for everyone in the family, including the baseball fanactics in your household. Give us a call or book online and as always thanks for allowing me to share this space with you!

Always at your service,
