If they can do it, why can't I?
Everyone else writes a Thanksgiving Blog and so will I. And if they were jumping off a bridge......
I've actually used that line on my kids and I'm sure the same look of total disdain I got from them was similar to the one I gave my mom back in the day. Although I was a little more discreet. Because back then, mom was a loving, caring woman - and it wasn't frowned upon by society to give a smart-ass kid a little love tap with the back of her delicate-yet -surprisingly-powerful hand.
So my first Thanksgiving shout-out goes to Mom. Afterall, without Moms, where would any of us be?She worked hard to give me a set of golf club's for high school graduation and started me on a lifetime of golf. Thanks Mom!
For the record readers, I probably wasn't slapped more than a handful of times over the 17 years I spent under her roof . And in full disclosure, I deserved dozens more than I ever received.
Top 18 Things I'm Thankful for this Thanksgiving (In no particular order of importance):
1. Thank you General Motors for dropping Tiger Woods as a spokesperson. Now you can take that Tiger money and focus on making cars that people actually want to buy.
2. Thank you Tiger for letting $7 million go like a quarter fell out of your pocket. And not making asinine statements like some of your fellow athletes. My personal favorite being former NBA player Latrell Sprewell's comment about having a family to feed and the $14 million dollar contract per year that was offered to him was an insult.
3. Thanks for in depth reporting by financial magazines. That $7 million dollars really is like a quarter falling out of Tiger's pocket. His reported income in 2008 was $122 million dollars.
4. Thank God the major golf tours have finally concluded their seasons. I can not feel guilty about watching golf only 10% of the time and football the other 90%.
5. Thank Tim Finchem for being somewhat flexible regarding The Fed Ex Cup. Keep working on it guys, you may get a format that everyone will like and understand in my lifetime.
6. Thankfully John Daly, the golfer, is in the news for playing golf and not for being the bad John Daly. Shot a 62 in the final round of The Hong Kong Open to finish in 17th place. They still love him overseas, still receives appearance fees of several hundred thousand dollars just to show up.
7. Thank goodness the economic morass is apparently reaching the bottom right along with the my terrible golf game. I now have two things to hope for in 2009; an economy recovery and some semblance of ability to play this game.
8. Thank you to the people I work with and the ownership group I work for. Both are tremendous groups of people. Have you thanked your staff or owners lately?
9. Thanks to Annika Sorenstam for her contribution to the game and the LPGA. Any interest in being the commish? God knows they could use someone with ability. By the way LPGA, another quality blunder by drug testing your biggest star in the last 15 years in her final tournament.
"Hey Annika, thanks for the memories, now pee in the cup and don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out!"
10. Thanks to Paul Azinger and the U.S. Ryder Cup team for winning one for our side. It's been too long!
11. Thanks to AK, Anthony Kim, and Camillo Villegas. Finally some young guns with some game and swagger. Those attractive ladies in your gallery don't hurt the telecast either.
12. Thanks for David Feherty. Is there a sharper wit in sports? If we can only get him to stop riding bikes.
13. Not to be a name dropper, but thank God for The Masters Tournament. I go every year and it is one of the great perks of being a member of The PGA of America.
14. Thanks to all of you who fix one ball mark plus your own. To those who don't, go stuff yourself. (holiday turkey reference)
15. Thank goodness for that stuff in turkey that makes you sleepy. Is that not one of the top three naps of the year?
16. Thankfully there are guys like Rocco Mediate who show up every now and again to push Tiger to the brink in Major Championships. Also, I have to give a thank you going back in time to Bob May for doing the same in arguably one of the greatest majors in championship golf history, The 2000 PGA.
17. Thankfully, there are 460 cc drivers, they really do make driving a golf ball easier. Now if only I had that same confidence in the rest of my equipment. I know, I know. It's the ....... (substitute any cliché). One of my favorite golden moldies "its the Indian, not the arrow"
18. Thankfully, we are at the end of the round/blog. Get it? 18 things I'm thankful for. 18 holes in golf. Thank you if you've made it to the end, I know I could use a stiff drink. To the 19th hole!
Happy Thanksgiving! Go Play Golf!
