Fish Club: February 2009 Archives

Now I know why everyone is excited to come to Myrtle Beach!

Myrtle Beach golf vacations are just flat-out good fun!

I had some old buddies come into town last week for a  few days of golf from Avalon Country Club in Swainton, N.J.....

Take this from someone who was a member there for several years. If you ever want to get fleeced on the golf course and "faced" in the bar, Avalon Country Club in Swainton, New Jersey is the place for you.

The fleeced part of the story:

Avalon Country Club is the only club that I have been associated with where a large number of the members get excited when their handicap goes up, not down.

I learned this the hard way as a very young member who actually thought that winning at golf came from improving your ability and lowering your handicap, not  "pistol whipping" young punks with a short #2 pencil and the USGA handicapping system.

Try beating a guy who is a 16 handicap, who can shoot in the high 70's for three consecutive rounds during a club championship, but not break a 100 for three consecutive rounds during your weekly game.

I'm still pissed about a couple of President's Cup match play tournaments that I get knocked out in by these bandits in the late 80's and very early 90's.

The "faced" part of the story.

The sad part is I couldn't, or can't, stay mad at any of these guys because once the golf was over and they collected my money, we had one helluva a good time at the bar at the Avalon Country Club. They never left with one dime of my cash in their pocket. As a matter of fact, the old saying at Avalon is "it is better to come in second then first, because the guy who finishes in first place always pony up for the drinks." Imagine 24 booze hounds changing from beer on tap to top-shelf liquor, chances are, your first place winnings aren't going to cover that round of drinks. I always found the sweet taste of victory turned a little sour when you had to reach into your pocket to cover the bar tab. It can only happen at Avalon C.C. "When you win, you lose!"

Second place winner always walked away with a free drink and cash in pocket.

Anyway, you're here, not there , and they came to visit me in Myrtle Beach recently and we had one helluva good time. Three great golf courses, 4 rounds of golf, many drinks and some great meals left me feeling fat, flushed and happy.

My golf was decent, but you have to be very good in this group to make money. However, I managed to not spend a whole lot on a hometown vacation as all the money usually goes back into libations. The guys were very nice to treat me to a great meal on the last night in town at a legendary local restaurant. The guys, all 7 of them, managed to get back home in one piece, no injuries, no meltdowns, no fights, no arrests and all with smiles on their faces. A perfect trip!
