South Carolina Golf Course Ratings Panel Honors Both Mike Strantz Designs in Biennial Rankings of the State’s Best

Pawleys Island, S.C. - True Blue Plantation and Caledonia Golf & Fish Club were recently named to the “50 Best Courses in South Carolina” ranking recently announced by the South Carolina Golf Course Ratings Panel. Reviewed in the April issue of Palmetto Golfer, the Panel’s biennial ranking recognizes the state’s top resort, public access, daily-fee courses and private courses in even-numbered years. Both Strantz courses were named to the 2007 “50 Best Courses in South Carolina” ranking, and were also selected to the 2007 “Best Courses That You Can Play” list that honors resort, public access, and daily-fee course in odd years.

“We are thrilled to be ranked as two of the top 50 golf courses in the state,” said John Springs, general manager for Caledonia and True Blue. “I credit our success to our superior staff and the on-going course development projects that keep both courses in pristine condition.”

The South Carolina Golf Course Ratings Panel consists of 125 Palmetto State residents who represent all facets of the game and all levels of playing abilities. Rankings are conducted by a closed vote with results tabulated once voting has closed. The objective of the South Carolina Golf Course Ratings Panel is to promote excellence in South Carolina golf course design and operations through competitive rankings, education and public advocacy.

In determining course ratings, panelists consider the following criteria: routing - how the course flows from hole to hole in harmony with existing topography; variety - degree to which the course demands a full range of shot requirements; strategy - how design features test course management; equity - the course’s capacity to reward good shots and penalize poor ones; memorability - the distinctiveness of the golf course and its individual holes; aesthetics - the degree to which scenery and surrounds lend to the enjoyment and experience - incorporates all elements of the course: practice areas and clubhouse.

About Caledonia Golf & Fish Club
Caledonia Golf & Fish Club has been named one of the “Top 100 You Can Play” by Golf Magazine, “Top 25 Courses in South Carolina” and “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses” by Golf Digest, “Top 100 Modern Courses” by Golfweek, South Carolina Golf Course Ratings Panel’s list of “50 Best Courses” and “Top 100 Best Courses for Women” by Golf for Women. The course is built upon the site of a historic 18th century rice plantation in Pawleys Island, S.C. The 6,526-yard, par-70 course has been described as having “18 signature holes,” with holes routed around majestic oaks and meandering streams. The picturesque 18th hole borders the Plantation’s old rice field, and requires a precise tee shot that sets up a difficult second shot: a forced carry onto a green that is watched closely by the beautiful antebellum style clubhouse.
