Caledonia Golf & Fish Club And True Blue Honored by Golf World
September 30, 2009, Pawleys Island, S.C. - Caledonia Golf & Fish Club and True Blue Plantation were named to the 2010 Golf World Readers' Choice Awards, just announced in the magazine's September 28 issue. The two Mike Strantz designs were recognized as two of the nation's Top 50 Public Golf Courses with Caledonia ranked at No. 20 and True Blue at No. 26. They are the only Myrtle Beach area courses to be honored in this category in 2009 and are repeat honorees as both were named in the inaugural 2008 Reader's Choice Awards.
Golf World went directly to everyday golfers and asked for their favorite courses to play when putting together their second annual Readers' Choice Awards, said John Springs, general manager of Caledonia and True Blue. This is truly a people's list and we are honored to have been chosen by the readers of Golf World.
Golf World invited readers to evaluate the best public, private and resort facilities in the country using 12 criteria established by the magazine's editors that included the quality of the course; the condition of the course; the course's reputation and prestige; golf practice facilities; speed of play; clubhouse/locker rooms; hotel accommodations; caddie program; golf pro shop; food/dining; off-course activities/amenities; service and overall value. More than 48,000 individual facility ratings and 600,000 criteria evaluations were received in the second year of the reader's choice awards.
To arrive at an overall aggregate score for each facility, Golf World calculated the average ratings received in all applicable criteria. The raw scores were weighted to reflect different levels of significance for each of the criteria, with the formula varying based on the category. The overall total then was recalculated to a 100-point scale so a perfect score on every ballot yielded an aggregate of 100.

True Blue Plantation Celebrates 10th Anniversary
In 1998, the golf world watched as Casey Martin was permitted to use a golf cart at the U.S. Open; David Duval finished as the PGA TOUR's leading money winner and Se Ri Pak captured the U.S. Women's Open and the LPGA Championship, launching a wave of Korean golfers on the LPGA TOUR.
Locally in 1998, the Grand Strand golf scene gained its 101st course as True Blue Plantation opened its doors in the spring, and the course marks its 10th anniversary in 2008. Designed by the late Mike Strantz, True Blue is situated on the site of the historic True Blue Plantation, a famous 19th century indigo and rice plantation in Pawleys Island. Originally 6,842 yards in length, the complex measured 340 acres and was a flat site before Strantz reworked it into a hilly terrain with wide fairways. Strantz based much of True Blue on the characteristics of Pine Valley and Pinehurst No. 2, emphasizing a natural feel to the course, similar to the courses in the U.K., and utilizing native grasses and vegetation. During its first six months of operation, True Blue hosted more than 21,500 rounds of golf.
Immediately after opening, True Blue was recognized as the Fourth Best New Upscale Public Golf Courses of the Year by Golf Digest, and was honored as one of the Best of America New Course by The Golfer Magazine. By its second year of operation, True Blue was rated number two out of the Top 25 Golf Courses in the South by GOLFMagazine, the only Myrtle Beach area course to make the ranking.
Recently, True Blue has received numerous awards annually, including being named to America's Greatest 100 Public Golf Courses by Golf Digest, South Carolina Golf Course Ratings Panel's ranking of 50 Best Courses, GOLF Magazine's Top Ten Places To Play and Top 25 Courses in the South and one of the South Carolina's Best Public Access Golf Courses from Golfweek.
We're excited to mark our 10th year as one of the best courses on the Grand Strand, said Bob Seganti, True Blue head golf professional. In the last 10 years, we've recorded more than 400,000 rounds of golf and hosted countless amateur, junior, civic and charitable tournaments. We look forward to hitting the one million rounds mark in our next 10 years of operation.

True Blue Head Pro Bob Seganti Co-Host on
In a destination famous for the quantity and quality of golf courses, one would expect Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to have a radio talk show based on the game it loves so much. Thanks to an idea born 18 months ago from True Blue head golf professional Bob Seganti, that dream finally came to fruition in March of 2008, as the Grand Strand area finally gained its first golf radio talk show, "The Michelob Light Golf Guys."
Hosted by Seganti and WBTW sports director Matt Lincoln, The Michelob Light Golf Guys broadcast live every Saturday from 8:00 - 10:00 a.m. on ESPN Radio, The Team (93.7/93.9 FM and 1050 AM). During the show, The Michelob Light Golf Guys promote local golf news and events, national golf topics, trivia contests golf round giveaways and weekly instruction tips from Brad Redding, a GOLF Magazine Top 100 instructor from Grande Dunes Resort.
Recent guests have included Ken Griffey, Sr., former Air Force head football coach DeWitt Berry, PGA TOUR golfers Dustin Johnson, Chris DiMarco, Kevin Streelman, David Feherty and Charlie Rymer.
When asked to describe the show, co-host Seganti jokingly replied that the Michelob Light Golf Guys is a show for people who can laugh at themselves, laugh at their golf games and still love the game every bit as much as the plumb-bobbing, club-throwing, vanity-handicap-carrying, name-dropping, boring-everyone-to-tears with his/her description of every shot they hit that day, guy or gal we all know and despise who never buys a beer. The only reason we tolerate them is that we both love the same game.
Bob Seganti brings a special insight to The Golf Guys from having worked in the golf industry on the Grand Strand, said cohost Matt Lincoln. It seems like Bob knows everyone in the golf community, and everyone knows Bob. He also brings a special wit to the show that you don't usually find in stuffy golf professionals. Bob also has one undeniably important trait - a great face for radio.

Reviewed in the April issue of Palmetto Golfer, the Panel's biennial ranking recognizes the state's top resort, public access, daily-fee courses and private courses in even-numbered years. Both Strantz courses were named to the 2007 "50 Best Courses in South Carolina" ranking, and were also selected to the 2007 "Best Courses That You Can Play" list that honors resort, public access, and daily-fee course in odd years.
"We are thrilled to be ranked as two of the top 50 golf courses in the state," said John Springs, general manager for Caledonia and True Blue. "I credit our success to our superior staff and the on-going course development projects that keep both courses in pristine condition."

In determining course ratings, panelists consider the following criteria: routing - how the course flows from hole to hole in harmony with existing topography; variety - degree to which the course demands a full range of shot requirements; strategy - how design features test course management; equity - the course's capacity to reward good shots and penalize poor ones; memorability - the distinctiveness of the golf course and its individual holes; aesthetics - the degree to which scenery and surrounds lend to the enjoyment and experience - incorporates all elements of the course: practice areas and clubhouse.
